After your Windows updates are complete and you have installed your programs, it would be wise to consider making an image of your hard drive on an external USB drive.

If you have problems in the future you can restore the image much faster than doing all the installs again.

    Bumpkin, yes, that's a good idea! :)

So it's okay to install all the windows-updates? All the important AND recommended updates? Or only the important updates?
I don't want to do anything wrong.

    Thanks for your help!

    Tina,
This is Win 7 and not eXPired.

That mean install ALL critical, install all important, install all optional updates except for the Bing Desktop optional update which is of very questionable value.

Here is how to correctly update your Win 7.

    UPDATING YOUR WIN 7
    1. ASSURE THAT YOU RECEIVE ALL UPDATES
WIN | type WINDOWS UPDATE | ENTER |
    Change settings (left-hand column) |
checkmark all four of the boxes | OK
    button

Approve any dialog boxes presented. Let Windows install any update features.

WIN is the key with the Microsoft flag on top.

    2. INSTALL CRITICAL UPDATES
    Check for Updates
    (left-hand column)
    Install ALL critical updates.
Restart your computer (even if not prompted)

Repeat this procedure until there are no more critical updates.

DO NOT TRUST the “Windows is up to date” in center of dialog. until you see that TWICE IN A ROW!

    3. INSTALL IMPORTANT UPDATES
Use the “critical update” procedure until all important updates are installed.

    4. INSTALL OPTIONAL UPDATES
Under Optional updates you will be presented with:
    a) Microsoft Bing Desktop which is of questionable value
    b) a list of about 34 language updates.

You can hide those updates so that aren't continually notified of those updates.
When you click on 34+ optional updates are available, then you
    a) highlight all of the language updates,
    b) right-click anywhere in the highlighted list.
    c) click on Hide Updates,
    d) OK button.
    Install ALL other Optional Updates.
    Use the “critical update” procedure.

    UPDATE GOLDEN RULES

    Install ALL, yes, ALL updates.
This is Win 7 and not Vista or XP (eXPired).

    UPDATE IS HUNG –TAKING FOREVER
Hung is very doubtful unless you interrupted updates.

CTRL + SHIFT + ESC key combo will pop-up the Task Manager.
Lo and behold, Windows Update is still running!

You hold down the CTRL and SHIFT keys.
While holding them down, tap the ESC key once.

    Awww!

I got a freeze yesterday and today!

I've formatted the harddisc, did a clean install of windows7, installed all the updates.

    I didn't install any hardware-drivers, driver-updates. All the hardware-drivers are from 2010 or 2009.

And still I got a freeze!

I never get any freeze in safemode. Only when I do a normal boot.

I really don't know what to do. I'm thinking about buying a new computer...

Use Speccy to keep an eye on your temps?

I don't remember did you also run memtest86+ earlier?

Darn, I thought you were through with this freezing!

Go to the HP support site and enter your computer model number. See if there is an update for your bios firmware.

As Karl asked, did you download and burn memtest86+? Without reading this thread from the start, did you remove your graphics card and use the on board video? This is starting to sound like a hardware problem.

    Greg,
I'm afraid that the clean install procedure is not going to cure the problem.

I've been on this one for a time and the appearance that their is an intermittent failure of some component, for example, the power supply or the motherboard.

I agree, Karl. But it would be good to have a baseline perfect Clean Reinstall on a wiped HD to say for sure it isn't software.
