Windows is locked up at welcome screen

My dell inspiron laptop was working fine, I was using Adobe Lightroom when it gave me
An error prompt and shut down. I tried rebooting the computer in safe mode and regular mode, no matter what I do I reacts the same. Takes me to the login screen where I am able to type in my password, then it goes to the welcome screen and stays there. I have a lot of work on this computer and it hasn't been recently backed up. Am I going to lose all my information and what should I try next?

    aholloway,
    Welcome to SevenForums.

    Please see:
Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Boot

Do you have a Win 7 DVD?
Do you have a Win 7 System Repair Disc?

Reason for these two questions is so that you can backup to an external usb stick any data dear to your heart.

You can make the system repair disc on another win 7 as long as:
if you have a 64 bit win 7, go to a 64 bit win 7.
if you have a 32 bit win 7, go to a 32 bit win 7.

    CREATE A SYSTEM REPAIR DISC

START | type System Repair | Enter key | Create Disc button

    You said "discs".

Win 7 comes on one and only one DVD.

    Can you explain?

It's the disc that came with the computer. But after more research I've decided to Lena professional handle this. I'm afraid of messing it up even more. So in the morning I will be taking it in, in hopes of recovering some of the information before I damage it anymore. Thanks for the help!
