Windows 7: Windows 7 custom desktop icons missing

Windows 7 custom desktop icons missing

My knowledge of computers is basically limited to internet searching

I have an issue, last night I downloaded several "custom desktop icons" from a site and replaced several of my programs icons with custom ones. Today when I started up my laptop every program that I gave a custom icon has now changed to a missing or default icon. I cannot seem to get the default icons back.

I would be happy if I got to keep those custom icons but will be satisfied if I can just return them to their default. Any ideas?

Try Icon Cache - Rebuild

If that did not work try Option 2 of this tutorial. It may reset your icons SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker it will not harm any data or programs you have installed it will try to find and repair any corrupt system files that you have. You may need to do this up to 3 times and reboot after each scan.
You may need to rebuild the icon cache after the scan.

It appears that your system may have got infected with a virus. You can try rebooting the system in “Safe Mode with Networking” and perform system restore. If you are able to access the internet, please download “unhide.exe” from the link below:

This tool may prove helpful in recovering your lost programs and data. Once your programs and data are recovered, it’s recommended to scan the system with your antivirus software.

If this issue started occurring after doing some recent software changes on your computer, then I would suggest you to restore your system back to a date when it was working fine. System Restore will affect Windows system files, programs, and registry settings only.

For System Restore steps, you can refer to the URL mentioned:
