    anyone had this problem?

hi, this is my first post, but i've searched all over for this problem w/ no luck.

i've had win7 up and running on my main computer, but i'm having trouble getting it working on my lenovo thinkpad t60. I install just fine, and can begin to install programs (avg, office, firefox, chrome, etc. media player classic hc)

sometime after running updates and installs, explorer crashes, and restarts, and then things start going wrong. all/most of the icons in the start menu are gone. applications I installed no longer run. if i try to run an .exe file from explorer (after restart) nothing happens.

Then on a reboot of the system, i can't get past the login screen because of personal profile services failure message (no #'s or code to give).

I also tried the OEM image of vista (factory original settings) and get similar results.

Has anyone experienced anything similar to this? Is there a setting somewhere deep in the bios or something i'm missing? please help!

    thank you

To clarify - the same or similar problem occurs in Windows 7 and also on a clean install of Vista? No dual boot?

If yes, you have a BIOS problem or hardware failure.

the exact same problem. no dual boot. clean system both times.

I just saw a hdd setting in the bios. ahci vs. compatability mode? could that be something?

    Change it. Test. Report.

This is not the first time I have seen ahci causing issues. If you aren't running raid, set it to IDE

A reasonable indication that the problem is caused by something else. brb

Than this means that to troubleshoot, you have to go barebones. One HD, one Optical drive, min memory sticks and no usb plugins. Clean install. Make sure that you have latest Board updates especially bios and INF files since this is a new OS.
