I had to make the struggle black abyss of Windows Vista to get to Windows 7, and I glad I made the struggle as Windows 7 is great operating system in my opinion :)

I've journeyed from Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista and now Windows 7!

I know this is a Windows 7 thread but I've watched youtube videos on Windows 8.
    Holy hell!
The whole development team should be fired. Windows 8 is making me like Windows 7 that much more.

In case you hadn't noticed the head of windows division has just "resigned".

That doesn't necessarily mean things are going to get better for the user.

It is up to the customer to decide if they want to be monetarised - or if they take a stand and reject it.

If you want to reject that - do not buy win8 - do not buy a tablet/pc with win8 on it.

Hang on to what you have as long as you can - or switch to Apple if you must.

Linux is not viable for most people - it would be great for everyone if it was - maybe someday.

Unfortunately, very few users will understand what win8 is about - or the direction MS is trying to lead them in.

Steady on there, SIW2. Anyone would think the customer was always right !

Seriously, I'm delighted that so many people are not taking the "Oh I just love Windows 7" line and are standing up to be counted as users opposed to Windows 7. (Sorry if I've misjudged your comments).

I wonder how far back in time the lovers of Windows 7 actually go? Do they really know how good previous versions of Windows were. O.K., some were not as good as others, but you can't have everything.

Dabber it is hard to unlearn old habits and learn new ways to do things you been doing a different way for years, It is not that it is harder it is that you started with something different, It is kind of like if you started on linux then any windows version would be confusing to you becuase you started with something totally different. If you started on windows 7 and one day went back to xp you would be confused and wondering how you do this or that so it is no surprise that is why your so confused and i know it is harder for elder people to learn new things especially when they are set in there ways. I have a grandpa and i can't even teach him how to use a computer, he hates them with a passion and will not use them, Now that is closed minded. Can't learn if you don't truly want to and just saying you want to may not be what you really want inside. Not trying to say your to old.
Come on now. You don't HAVE to find new ways of doing things. New habits, as you call them. If you like something why not use it? (Or, if it ain't broke don't fix it.)
If I STARTED on Windows 7 I wouldn't be going BACK TO Windows XP. I wonder how many of the "I love Windows 7" brigade are experiencing their first operating system? That is, they started on Windows 7.

You say: " i know it is harder for elder people to learn new things especially when they are set in there ways. " Not me. I learn things very well, as long as they are learnable. Not sure Windows 7 is.

Not trying to say I'm too old? Well, your whole post just did.

    ^^^^this

And I saw someone asking about previous versions.
I have used every version of windows since and including 3.1

Before that I used DOS. I still say seven is the best of them I've dealt with.

...and the way 8 is looking unless I get a tablet or a surface device it will continue to stay that way for awhile yet. 8 makes sense and I'm sure it's a fine OS, I just don't see myself using it without a touchscreen interface, and minus that new interface there just isn't enough bells to make me want to upgrade.

I also used DOS, Win 3.1, Win 95, Win 98, Win XP and Win 7. There is no question that Win 7 is best.

I am 67 years young, disabled and according to my other half, "not the full shilling."
As such, I began with Windows 3:1 and journeyed through 95, 98 and XP, to 7, completely missing out Vista thanks to several forums and their advice/experiences.
Patience should be your watchword, fella. Get to know it.
Life is all about learning processes, if we are not prepared to learn the new, we lose a little of what it is to be Homo Sapiens.
I haven't used the full post above, as you will realise.

Thanks for that. Yes, I know the phrase "Not the full shilling" Not that it applies to me, nor to you, I'm sure.
    I didn't realise there was a Windows 3:1.
Perhaps I should take more time to read ALL of the user manual(s) and not just the bits I want to know about. But, I used to have a To Do List; now it is a Far Too Much To Do List. And I tend to use the time getting things done (e.g. I have to edit TWO videos on DVD before mid December) rather than reading about an unfathomable operating system.
You don't have to keep the same car (especially if there are too many miles on the clock) but you might want to buy a new model of your favourite car. That's why I am asking to make a new version of XP - not changed too much - and call it Windows 9 . . . or 10 . . . or wherever they have reached "behind the scenes". The next version.

BY THE WAY - for anyone who has not gone back to re-read earlier threads - and why should you - I have found the post with many links that I had lost - but unearthed a mystery at the same time. The "lost" post was #31, as you can read on my post #38.

LET ME ADD (instead of creating a new post): If Windows 7 is so good and Windows XP so terrible, why did Microsoft create XP Mode in Windows 7? Did they realise they had been a little hasty in killing off XP?

ADDED LATER: Why no Vista Mode and all the rest? Perhaps Microsoft could make some money by producing all previous Windows versions in Mode mode, as it were. People could buy their favourite previous version.

    Actually I like windows 7.

It is windows 8 that is the danger.

Stay with what you have if it works for you.

New is not automatically better - certainly not where windows 8 is concerned.
