Search does not find files that are present?

    Greetings,, noob here...

I found several instances of csrss.exe running. Looked up this file, and find it to be a legit file name for a necessary service. All fine so far.

So I decide to search my C: drive for this file, just to see if I have multiple copies, and possibly one might be bogus. I pull up an explorer window, type csrss into the search box, and it finds NOTHING...

Now, I can go find one instance of csrss.exe: it's in the windows/system32 folder... and when I search ONLY this folder, it shows up in the search. But when I try to search the whole C: drive, it can't find it, anywhere. Searching C: for other files runs successfully.

why wouldn't this file appear in a sch of the C drive? Any clues appreciated... thanks!

Give FileLocator Lite (aka Agent Ransack) a try.
It's free, easy to use, and works very well.

Thanks for the tip, FileLocator (lite) works perfectly.

I wonder: what changed? win7's Explorer functioned just fine for over a year, and then...?

Hello Harry, and welcome to Seven Forums.

I'm glad FileLocator will work for you.

You might see if using step 3 in the tutorial below for your search settings in Windows may work better.

Search - Have More Accurate Search Results

    Hope this helps, :)

In all honesty the New Search in Win7 has never worked for me. It never returns files I am looking for and I can't find any options to set it to search ALL FILES and or Hidden and System files. MS has take that/those options away.
