Why is Windows 7 64-bit not 64-bit?

Windows 7 x64 is a 64-bit operating system, it just has a 32-bit compatibility layer inside it just like how Windows 7 x86 (which is 32-bit) has a 16-bit compatibility layer inside it.

If you want to remove the compatibility layer (known as WoW, Windows on Windows), then you're more than welcome to try. If you want to delete "Program Files (x86)" folder, you're more than welcome to do it. It's your computer and Windows will allow you to tamper with its system files and directories if you so wish.

I'm finding this thread a very interesting psychological experimant. Everytime Spock3 is presented with any form of logic he/she fights to get out of the corner he/she has created. Weird but interesting! I wonder how it will end?

The title of this paragraph was:

    Why 64-bit apps cannot load 32-bit Dll's & 32-bit apps load 64-bit Dll's
Whilst that is correct, it does not at all pertain to the capability of 64bit processors to run 32bit programs. It is only talking about mixing 64bit programs (apps) with 32bit DLLs - and vice versa.

Young man, if you want to continue this discussion with a useful result, I advise you to first take a class in processor architecture - and a class in operating system architecture would not hurt either.

And if I took those classes, dear whs, I would come to the conclusion that Windows 7 x64 is not a pure 64-bit operating system. And then you would argue none of them are, and you know that it's not true. However, the WoW layer produces problems, because it tempts users to use 32 and 64-bit plug-ins which are handled by what is called a "bridge" and what produces unexpected results. It is a compromise, and some people hate to compromise. I guess you would also compromise when you choose your partner. However, I won't. I'd rather try to find the pure one. I only want to name things as they are: Windows 7 has a 64-bit architecture with a 32-bit emulation. But it is not a pure 64-bit operating system.

I wonder how old this person actually is, A kid trollin or an old person stuck in their ways?
Either way this is still one of the strangest threads i've seen here. Would'nt it be better to do something usefull like study the subject you claim to know so much more about than all the people here. Or sit here waiting for people to reply to a thread thats not ever going to end how you want it.
You've been on this page constantly since starting the thread. Busy music making

The annoying thing about this thread is, It could actually be a usefull discussion.
I've never given any thought to my 64bit install, and just accepted the need for backwards compatibility. Some of the info on here has been useful helping me understand why need a x86 folder.

But I guess the question remains...so why not pure 64bit? and this isn't aimed at MS (I don't believe they've proclaimed W7 64bit as exclusively that). What if I had a pure 64bit windows/ linux / OsX - what wouldn't work??

Or would software houses and manufacturers just have to accept the situation and get on with realising that 64bit is the only way??

Good luck. You have your whole life to find one like that.

life is about compromise, particularly relationships.
you will be waiting a long time for miss perfect in every way to come along.
and when she does she will probably find your standards to high to keep up with.
then it will be why does a 36DD insist on wearing a B cup when she is clearly a C cup
