Computer plays sound on main speakers while headphones are plugged in?

Hi! I'm not very good with computers so I need some help with this.
When I plug in my head phones my computer does not register them and keeps playing music on the main speakers, I have checked the Sound in the controlpanel but only the main speakers are listed there.

I have an Acer Aspire computer with Windows 7 Home Premium 64Bit.

Please help since I am clueless with this!

Hello Affio and welcome to the forums!

Have you tried unplugging the speakers and plugging the headphones into the jack the speakers were in? See if it recognises them then.

Thank you! Sorry, I should formulate myself better I meant the built in speakers or sound system are the ones that work, don't have anything plugged in except the headphones

I think you need your driver does not recognize your headphones or if not try connecting it to other sources to check if it's your headphone problem or your pc .

Right click the default speaker icon in the notification tray and under the Playback tab can you select the headphones from the ensuing list?
