How do I reduce the size of my screen?

Yesterday I turned on my desktop PC and the desktop screen, all the icons and the toolbar was much larger than they have ever been before. I have searched the forums and they all say to change the screen resolution. I have checked this and it is 1024 x 768 and the dpi is 100% at 96. I have tried clicking the desktop and scrolling the mouse back too but nothing has worked. Another forum suggested upgrading the graphics driver which I did but that just made it worse so I uninstalled that. I also did a System Restore and that didn't work either.

Any help or advice please? This is getting very annoying, especially as I don't know what I did to get this problem.

    Many thanks.

Hold the ctrl key down and then scroll the mouse wheel.

I have already tried pressing ctrl and scrolling the mouse; have also tried pressing ctrl and then the minus key. This does not do anything.
It's not just the image on the screen that is enlarged, it is everything - toolbar, icons, taskbar, everything.

Check the Resolution. Check that the Zoom feature isn't turned on.

It sounds like a resolution problem, what size is your monitor?

Have a look at #5 of this tutorial,

    Screen Resolution - Display Settings

Since you also updated and then uninstalled your graphics driver, you may want refresh your WEI,

Windows Experience Index - Update or Refresh Score

If you could fill in your system specs as well, that would help a lot,

System Info - See Your System Specs

Do you have a 3rd party program installed that changes the appearance of Windows7?
