Cannot right click on drives without runtime errors

Somehow or other I have a shortcut on my desktop for my data disc E and when I try to delete it I cannot open the right click menu. I get the horrible Microsoft VisualC ++ Runtime Library error "that the app has requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual way."

Windows Explorer then stops running and does a restart. The same problem occurs when I right click my C: drive and E: drive icons in the My Computer window.

Although I don't have a floppy disk drive the icon for it also acts in the same way.

When I backup data eg Favorites Folder and burn to a CD the computer does not play it back although the data is on the disc and will play on my laptop.

I am concerned that if I do a reinstall of Win 7 the underlying problem may not be fixed if it is a conflict with a non Microsoft program. I have done all the recommended things, Fixit, scannow, misconfig a minimal startup and everything else I could find but to no avail.

Is there a kind genie out there to offer some advice?

Try safe mode and/or use system restore to go back to time before errors started occuring ?

thanks but tried that , neither worked. I can't get into safe mode as I used to via f8, have to use msconfig. Something's going on!

no safe mode is a concern that may indicate something a bit deeper going on, have you tried an sfc scan
SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

    Hi

Yep, I've tried that also and like all the other things I have done showed everything is perfect. However, I have just read the thread below from Ben946210 of 4 weeks ago which is the same error and see his was caused by Acronis still hanging around after it had been uninstalled. I uninstalled that pesky thing weeks ago but it is still all over the registry so I will tackle that next and see if it is the culprit.

I used the Fixit app from Microsoft and it removed all the bits of Acronis that were left. Success!! Problems solved.
thanks for your input, life without help forums would be impossible.
