Windows 7: dllhost.exe constant 50% cpu

Windows 7 Ultimate x64
dllhost.exe constant 50% cpu

I just did a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and I have a new problem:

dllhost.exe (COM Surrogate) is constantly taking up ~50% CPU, I don't have Nero installed, the only things I've installed so far are:

Windows Live Messenger + Plus! by Patchou
Alcohol 120%
nVidia Forceware(newest)
Drivers for my E-MU 1212M soundcard
In the middle of an installation of Adobe Creative Suite(but the problem was before I started installation).

UAC is on.

I've seen some topics discussing high RAM usage of this process, but here it's only taking 2MB RAM.

Is this a known issue?

I found out that the module to blame is ole32.dll that's running inside dllhost.exe. But I've found nothing about this problem...

Well, a reboot solved the problem, so it seems, lets hope it doesn't come back...

Windows 7 Ultimate x64

It seems to be coming back, I did some tests, and it does not seem that a particular app is causing it, it just appears when it feels like it.
Ending the process causes it to spawn again, when I end it again it goes away and my PC seems to be running fine after that.

I'm stull curious of the cause. Maybe we will know more when more people will start using Windows 7.

The culprit on my system was a wav file that was on my desktop, apparently Windows was trying to generate a preview or something, which didn't work.

I tried this program Process Monitor(google: "procmon") which showed the explorer.exe was trying to access the file continuously.

Try checking if there are any media files in the root of you ext drive, delete them and check what happens

Or you could just check with procmon without trying, the programs logs _everything_ that you computer does, and you have to scroll throug millions of events(but the media file that causes the problem will be listed many times and be easy to spot).

I had the same problem but I solved it.

That's because I installed win7codec,
then my win7 can display thumbnails of FLV files.
But some bad FLV files can't be decoded by WMP,then there will be some thing wrong with dllhost.exe explorer.exe wmplayer.exe
Those may get 50% usage of cpu.

When you explore some bad flv files by thumbnail, you will meet this problem.
What will be the worst:a bad flv files on your desktop, and you had not turn off thumbnail.---Every time you refresh the desktop,a dllhost will appear.

This is an adware application. Uninstall it.

It is not adware, you can choose if you wish to install the "sponsor".

Thank you!

Thank you so much, yeyunpeng! I had been having this problem too (i have win7codecs too), and now i know why. Thanks a lot, Dllhost.exe was driving me nuts, (it always took 100% of the cpu, except when i tried to open some other program of folder it went down to 90% then back to 100%...seems it makes way a bit if you need to run something else...), making my pc lag extremely. However i still haven't found which file is causing the problem. Is there any way to find out?

Hello I just read on Tom's hardware that the size of a DLLHOST.EXE file should be less than 10kB on a windows 7 machine; any larger and the DLLHOST.EXE file may be infected by a virus. Is this true, please. Also, does this pertain to the Prefetch folder, please. I note the size of the files...
