Windows 7 User Account Permissions corrupt

    Hello,

I have Windows 7 account named Joe and it is an Administrator. Whenever I try to open a program or shortcut I get the "Open with..." dialog box and my option is Internet Explorer. Another odd thing that I discovered is that if I right click and select on "Run as Administrator" a program or shortcut will open as it should.

I also created a seperate Administrator account named Jim and everything opened normally.

So the Joe account has permission issues? I ran malware-bytes and tdsskiller and found nothing.

Hello binaryhat and welcome to Seven Forums.

It's possible that when you created the "Joe" administrator account (or shortly thereafter), something damaged or corrupted that account. When you created the "Jim" administrator account everything processed as it should. It would be near impossible to figure out why the "Joe" account isn't working the way it should.

Since you have a second administrator account under "Jim", you could delete the "Joe" account without any issues because all you need is one administrator account on the computer.

If you right click on an shortcut, what item is bold on the list? OPEN should be bold, it's the default action for double click. Anyway click on OPEN there. Same problem with EXE files instead of shortcuts to EXE files?

So is OPEN bold and does click on OPEN work there?

    Start REGEDIT and browse to
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\exefile
    and
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\.exe

do they exist? If so delete them. Problem is fixed (?)

But first tell me what is in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\exefile\shell\open\command
