Right, drive scan finished and found 86 errors. Didn't show me what the errors were, but saved them to an error log....... Which i cannot access (access denied)
Startup repair ran, and found no problems, booted it up, and straight back into "windows cannot start run startup repair"
Ran statup repair again, and windows cant fix the error.
Run sfc which rewrote some files, rebooted and back to the startup repair.
Running sfc again as i type..........

Ok, finished.
"Windows resource protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\logs\cbs\cbs.log."
Try to open the log, but get access is denied.

Any ideas?

Which drive scan found 86 errors? If this was HD Diagnostics scan for your HD make then replace the HD.

Yeah, was the segate utility.
I can see all the files on the drive (well, all the folders that are important to me) so im hoping once i get the new drive plugged in and loaded with windows, i'll be able to drag the important bits over to the new drive.
Luckilly this is one of my rarely used pc's and nothing is really critical on it. Sods law it's the only one without carbonite or backups done on it.
What do you think the chances are of the drive being totally scrap? Will a few bad sectors be picked up on install if i put xp on it? Have a couple of programs that will only run on xp.

There is a step for rescuiing your files from boot in the troubleshooting tutorial.

You can try the maker's HD extended repair scan to see if it can repair it, followed by Disk Check. But I would not rely on the HD again if it still finds errors. A full format might quarantine the bad sectors.

Well, whacked the new drive in a managed to save everything from the old drive

One slight user error problem....... I thought i'd use the old drive to put xp/windows 8 on, so whacked in my xp disc, chose the drive to format .............. Yep, you guessed it, the wrong drive!

Just going back through it all again and dragging everything across, then will unplug the new drive before attempting to stick xp on

Thanks to all that tried to help!
