Yes, if you switch the monitor to DVI, you need to connect a DVI cable from that connector to the DVI connector on your video card. They may be auto sense, I know mine are. I have one on DVI and one on VGA. I didn't have to change any settings. The new monitor I just got at Christmas is the same way it does it all on its own.

Thanks for being so patient and spelling it out, I understand now what I have got and so I will need to get a male to male cable in order to use this card with a second monitor. Should have checked on the card in more detail, just assumed that DVI D worked like before only better!, obviously the reason why they at least put one vga connector to use direct to a monitor. Thanks again, hoping you get a mild winter up there!!

Make sure its a DVI-D male to male. The connector on your monitor is likely a DVI-D and a DVI-I male will not plug into a DVI-D female receptacle. The DVI-I has extra pins and the matching holes are filled in on the DVI-D connector. I think its those 4 big wide ones.
