well I did download GPU drivers that were designed for windows 7.. but for chipset, I used vista 64's since there weren't any newer ones and probably never will.. could that be an issue? An unsupported motherboard?

I have to stop you right there. Are you effing kidding me? How could you be happy running that awful OS. I mean XP x64 is basically broken from the second you install it and only goes downhill from there.
Sorry I just think you should get a chance to experience a real x64 OS I hope your issues get resolved with 7 because I would hate to see you go back to XP x64
well the performance is good and I know it's aweful, I've severely modified the entire system in any aspect to make it better. I would go to W7 for sure if it has better performance, it hurts my ego when I have to turn down graphical settings on almost every game. But may the 30% performance loss be connected to 'not supported' motherboard?
...and also 1 thing more.. I have insane difficulties to get Nvidia control panel to work... it's such a pain in the ***. I've tried many different drivers (all designed for W7 ofc.) And if I uninstall old drivers.. W7 automatically installs microsoft drivers and at some point.. that option got ****ed.. automatic driver installation just got killed.. and won't work anymore.. Now I have to install everything manually, but still no controlpanel... it just wont work. And if installing new drivers.. installshield tells me that 'system has not been modified' I know this topic has been taken up before, but nothing helps! No-one has a good solution.
This appears to be an nVidia issue...not a Windows issue.
Some features in my control panel are greyed out when i'm on the 64 bit machine...Vista/Win7.
