Computer is freezing up randomly and takes forever to go to sleep

    Hey,

My laptop is an Asus G74-SX running Windows 7 Home Premium 64

    Specs

    12gb Ram
    1.5 TB HDD
    i7 quad core
    Gtx 560m (3gb dedicated)

My computer randomly freezes (even as I was writing this post it froze for a while and i had to wait for it to come back to life). I am not sure why this is happening as it has been great for over a year. Also the when I put it to SLEEP (not hybrid or hibernation) it takes a LONG time (over 2 mins to hours).

I have restarted my computer 5 times yesterday and a couple times today, because it just stops working. If i open Task manager I get (NOT RESPONDING).. which has only happened this week.. not sure why.

Even by right clicking on My Computer to see my specs all I can see is
Installed Memory: Not Available (Should say 12gb)
Processor: Not Available (should say 2.0ghz)

it's happened twice that Windows Explorer is not responding (as in the windows viewer not the browser)

I am running 2013 AVG Free Anit Virus - and it's never been an issue.

    Please help!

i was on the phone with Asus support and they said to reinstall windows by pressing F9 on startup which should show "Windows Setup [ems enabled]", however all i see is "Windows 7" instead, which leads me to Start in Safe mode etc.

I backed everything up to reintsall windows on my computer but its not working as Asus said it would.

    Any Help??

Also i have no windows cd, he said cause its OEM i dont need it..

Hiyya Mark look mate support from any of the big companies is dull and ordinary at best to be honest and not least tedious.

Now from what you are saying I can only guess that the machine is a laptop and what they have told you to do is what is known as a factory default. That is there is a non touchable partition on the drive that has the system in it which in times like yours is used for re installing the OS. This of course also installs all the bloatware the manufacturer puts on and again the tedious updates, and deletes all of what you have on the drive so it is just as well you backed it up - well done!.

There is another option and it is entirely up to you. What you can do is to download an ISO of 7 onto a stick set the BIOS to boot from the USB and install the OS using the activation code on the sticker. Now this of course will wipe everything on the drive but at least you will not (as far as I know) have that bloatware they put on the original factory install.

What I would do is to try a couple of more times first - suppose they didn't give you any disks to repair with? or that you didn't make one when you got the machine? - good idea for times like this.

Let us know how this goes before we get into the other option the first try may have been just a glitch. Oh and tap that key when you power up don't just hold it down if that does work try F4 or F12.

    Agree 100%

Asus is TERRIBLE with customer support, I know all too well . Even their forums (and the ROG forums) only offer rudimentary "help", and toe the company line completely. While I have not had your specific problem (see my spec.'s), I have had more issues from the installed Asus bloat/crap than I care to think about. Since doing a clean, fresh install I have cut those issues to nothing. If you wait for Asus to send you any disc's , you're in for a long wait too. Not a Asus knocker , I love my G74Sx, but they seem to care just about the least for you, the customer, after they have your money of the brands I've owned anyway.

I highly recommend that you do the reinstall. Save your wifi and Nvidia drivers first though! You will need them.
