I dunno if that did anything... I can try rebooting and see what happens though.

Open up gpedit.msc through the start menu search box, browse to Windows Components \ AutoPlay Policies, and change the value of “Turn off Autoplay” to disable.

You, sir, are a genius!

Though I think you meant "disabled" and not "enabled" - either way, I turned both of those to disabled (under Computer and under User), and now it works.
Thanks!

(I also enabled the one about "always do this action" being disabled, since I like always having the choices)

Hello! My first post on this forum will involve the rebirth of this thread! I hope some of you are still subscribed..

Anyway, I am having the same exact problem drfsupercenter was suffering from. The ONLY difference is the fact I am on Home Premium. That means I don't have gpedit.msc on my computer to perform the solution that worked for him!!!

How can I access the group policy options on Home Win 7?

If no one knows, can one of you use the Process Monitor tool from Sysinternals to tell me what registry keys or file writes happen when you toggle the settings in your gpedit.msc? I am hoping I can just make the changes without gedit and solve this issue.....!

If anyone has any other ideas, I would be very appreciative! And thank you to drfsupercenter for bringing this thread and many solutions to light!! Everyone here should be Micro$oft employees .......... they arent this helpful and they cost quite a bit to utilize. You guys are FREE!

Hello! My second post on this forum will involve the MURDER of this thread! I hope some of the new visitors to this thread via google (like I was) can find the following information useful!

I was able to solve this problem, without needing gpedit.msc, and also without even rebooting, not even LOGGING OUT!

I am thankful for that because Dell's response after I asked them this same question was "You will have to format and reinstall windows". How completely unhelpful!! Almost as unhelpful as the Microsoft Answers website where robots just reply with information from the M$ knowledgbase and everything is repeated twice. GEEZE I hate when I land on that website after goolging a windowss problem!!!!!

ANYWAY, HEre is the soluition

Open regedit and navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
and then,
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Here you will find a key called "NoDriveTypeAutoRun" and probably set to 255. THATS THE PROBLEM.

Double click, change this to 145, then hit OK. Immediately you can plug in your USB or whatever other media ... and Notice autoplay is back!

If you want to enable autoplay foy ANY type of media what-so-ever, set it to 0 instead. Use 149 for Win XP.

Credit for this fix goes to a google search of mine, that landed on this thread. Next time I"m just gonna come here and search!!

bye for now

Ok, I know this is a sore subject, but are there any work-a-rounds to get handy programs like PortableApps to at least be an option to run when you plug it in? It kind of defeats the purpose of the whole thing. I'm not plugging in rogue USB sticks from strangers in dark alleys, just my own USB...
