    First post - thank you!

I was able to solve this problem, without needing gpedit.msc, and also without even rebooting, not even LOGGING OUT!
Even though in my case, a reboot was needed, setting my HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\NoDriveTypeAutoRun DWORD value=0 worked perfectly! Finally

Very glad I found this forum, cheers all

This is an old thread, but my thanks for last solution. I'd lost autorun - couldn't play DVDs, BDs at all. Could see the files when I opened the drive tha was it. Went to the Shell Hardware Detection setting as above, changed the setting to the correct one, restarted my computer( just on the safe side and ) put in a DVD and it popped right up playing like it should. Received other prompts exactly as I had set them in Ctrl Panel. Think that setting must enable/diable that whole default program autoplay page. Thanks, I was pulling my hair out!
