    Thank you all for your help. I have determined the drive to be bad and purchased a new one. I am now experiencing a problem with windows installation (I KNEW I had to make a partition, but the Dell instructions didn't mention it so I didn't do it.) If you want to join the fun, I have a post with the issue I am experiencing:
