Well since your system has 4gbs of ram then use 64 bit because 32bit will only let you use about 3-3.5. You wouldn't be using all your ram running in 32 bit and your system would benefit more from 64bit due to the extra memory and like mentioned in the post above. If you plan on upgrading ram at some point in the future then having 64 bit os installed would benefit you.

Nothing will be affected on D. Just be careful, take your time. When you do the install you will see 2 partitions listed, C will be at the top and D will be below it. You will know by their sizes.

Only format C, the 1 at the top.

Unless you have a system reserved partition, then that will be at the top and it will be a 100 MB partition. Can you post a shot of disk management.

during installation do have to leave a space of 100 mb for system reserve or just format c and then install.
after 64 bit ram usable will be greater then that.now almost 1gb is not used

Just format C don`t touch anyhting else.

Highlight the C partition, choose drive options, choose format. When it`s done the format simply choose next and the install will begin.

Make sure you have your data saved to your other partition before you start.

You do realize you are wiping out windows and you will have to reinstall all your programs and redo all the windows updates again. Windows will basically be blank. You do realize this, correct ?

    Salman Nazir,

To erase the Windows 7 32-bit version and replace it with the 64-bit, you can just do the following:

    1. Visit your Manufacturer's website and download drivers for your system that apply to Windows 7 64-bit and save them either to your D drive, or an external USB thumb drive.
      • The most important to probably make sure you get (if no others) will be the driver(s) for your LAN/Wireless connection... whichever you use to connect to the internet.
      • While Windows 7 comes with a lot of built-in drivers, I wouldn't trust it to have everything.

    2. Insert your Windows 7 64-bit CD into your CD-drive
    3. Restart the PC
    4. When prompted with "Press any key to boot from CD", press a key
    5. Wait for Windows to load its setup files
    6. Move through the prompts (including one that has you click a button that reads "Install") until it asks you to choose where to install windows
    7. Click the "Advanced" link so you can see all options
    8. Select the drive-partition where Windows is installed (in your case, the one that is less than 100 Gb) and click "Erase"
      • You can do this for the System Reserve drive (typically between 100-300 Mb) on a single boot system (which is what you have) without worry. Windows will recreate it if it isn't there
      • Do not touch your Data drive with the 300+ Gb

    9. Select the drive that is now labeled as "Unallocated space" and proceed through the prompts (basically telling Windows to install there)
      • There is no need to format it. Windows will do this automatically and set aside a piece of it for the System Reserve

    10. Continue and follow all instructions to install Windows 7 64-bit
    11. Install all missing drivers & Windows updates

All programs you installed under the previous OS will have to be reinstalled, even if you installed them to the D drive. There may be some few exceptions, but unless you're certain, just do it anyway.

64-bit is better than 32-bit. There may be some (old) programs that won't run on it, but there are quite a few compatibility modes within Win 7 and the 64-bit systems do a fairly good job at running 32-bit programs.

    Good luck!
