Hi Davonne225 and welcome to SF,

Please go to Start > then type in search file ass

then at top click on "Change the File type associated with a file extension"

Default Programs - Associate a File Type or Protocol

    Hope that helps

    Cheers

Do you mean show the file extension in Windows Explorer.

resume.doc instead of just resume for instance?

If so, open the Control Panel and click on Folder Options.
    Click on the View tab.
Uncheck "Hide extensions for known filetypes".

That very useful option no longer exists. In XP you can reach it though folder options, but starting with Windows Vista, the whole tab has been removed, so you have to either manually modify though the registry or use 3rd party software.
A good option for replacing the missing dialog is FileTypesManager: FileTypesMan - Alternative to 'File Types' manager of Windows
