Super weird problem - never seen this before, need help

I don't think I've ever seen this happen in all my years working with Win. I hope someone has a solution.

I have a 2 year old HP Pavilion dv7 with Windows 7 Home Premium. I took the battery out while it was unplugged and in sleep mode. When I plugged it in and rebooted the left mouse button, and left keypad button does not work. I am able to right-click and bring up menus but left-clicking is not working. Rebooted a few times still the same.

Here is an interesting thing. When I left-click on an icon on the desktop it works. When I want to close the window I just opened by left-clicking on the X, it doesn't work. When I hit CTR-ALT-DEL then I am able to left-click on the power down button.

Anyone see this sort of behavior from Win 7?

Uninstall the drivers for the mouse in device manager then restart windows. If that doesn`t fix it, get another mouse.

How would I do that without the ability to left-click? :)

Use the keyboard. The windows key with the flag on it will bring up the start menu, then just type dev in the search box, then use the down arrow to move down to device manager. Use the tab key to move around once you`re in a window. Once you get down to mouse and other pointing devices, use the right arrow key to bring up hid compliant mouse, then hit enter, then use tab and the arrow keys to get over to driver, then tab down to uninstall. I just did it using only the keyboard. The keyboard can do anyhting.

Have you gone into the Control Panel and re-set your mouse to the actions you want to use for right and left buttons?

Uninstalled mouse and pad drivers, rebooted, re-installed, rebooted - still the same problem. Trying to get into control panel using keyboard to see if I cam set mouse options.

If that doesn't help try System Restore to before the problem occurred.

Run a full scan with Malwarebytes and SUPERAntiSpyware.com - Downloads.

Establish a Clean Boot except for AV and touchpad software, check the logs for errors, utilize System Resources, Generate a System Health Report, test RAM and HD from Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7

Update or reinstall the touchpad software from the HP Support Downloads webpage for your model. Update the latest chipset.

Set Windows Updates to Automatic with Recommended treated the same as Important. Run all Important and Optional Updates to completion after enabling Automatically deliver drivers via Windows Update (Step 3)
