Hi, I have laptop with system (199mb), windows, recovery and tools, so the 4 primary are taken.
I created another partition in unallocated space, and it converted the disk and all partitions dynamic.

If I image the windows partition with macrium, convert the disk back to basic, and restore the image, will it work 100% as if it was imaged on a basic disk, or does the fact it was imaged on a dynamic partition change anything in the image?

Also, can I just move all the folders and files from the system partition to the windows partition, and just run a start-up repair in macrium or paragon, and it will make the windows partition active and bootable?

    Thanks.

Ok, I did it, and it seems to be working.

But I have a annoying thing pop up, every time windows is started, 2 desktop.ini windows open up in notepad.

I deleted them, can I just copy the original desktop.ini from the image back?

Also, it seems every desktop.ini on the windows system has become unhidden, and they show in every folder.
How can I change them back to system hidden files all at once???

    Thanks!

    Hello nevesswodniw,

You could use step 5 in OPTION ONE of the tutorial below to set hidden files to no longer show. :)

    Hi Brink,

The problem is they have all become visible, as in, every desktop.ini files' attribute in every folder has changed to visible...so even if show hidden files is unchecked, they still show.

Is there a way to get windows to batch fix every one of them back to system hidden attribute, or should I just search for every desktop.ini and delete them, and they will be re-created?

Also another problem that has appeared, is under "my computer" there is a drive icon ( with an assigned drive letter) that doesn't really exist. Its not a partition I created, it's not listed in disk management, and if I click it, it doesn't open, just says access denied.
Although it is under shares $.
How can I delete this from under my computer and as a share?

    Thanks again.

No. You don't want to go and delete them all. It wouldn't solve the issue, and they would just be recreated as needed.

If you have a restore point dated before these issues happened, then you could do a system restore using it to hopefully fix all of this.

Unfortunately there is no restore point, it was turned on afterwards.

Sorry, I'm a little confused now

Isn't that what I want, that is, to recreate them all as needed, with the proper attribute of a system hidden file, so deleting them all would be a good thing wouldn't it?

Otherwise, what else can I do? go and change the attributes of each desktop.ini inevery folder, one by one...

Also, any ideas on the drive icon?

    thanks again.

They would just be recreated unhidden again.

If you like, you could use the tutorial below to be able to quickly hide these files as you come across from the context menu to make it easier and faster. It doesn't set the "system" attribute (protected OS file) for them, but only the normal "hide" attribute.

OK, if that's the only way, I guess I'll just have to set them one by one.

But if the default is for windows to create a desktop.ini file with the system attribute, why would it re-create them unhidden?
BTW, what would have caused all of them to be set as unhidden in the first place?
