    Need Advice on Net.Frameworks

I have a home built system with Windows 7 64 bit. I have Net Framework 1.1 and 4.5. Now I have a program that says it needs 2.0, 3.0 or 3.5. From what I have read on the 3.5 web page it will take care of from 2.0 to 3.5. I'm concerned because I did have 4.0 and there was an update to it that wouldn't install. It was recommended that I install 4.5. I just want to be sure that installing 3.5 doesn't foul up anything.

You should run windows update and install every version of .netframework available. Up to and including the latest.

the frameworks are backwards compatible, so you can install all of them if you wish. .Net applications will target a specific framework. If an app requires a framework higher than is installed, it's installer should offer to install it as a pre-requisite. If you throw them all on now, you will have no issues. :)

I have researched further and found out that the Windows disk came with 3.5.1. I had to go into the Control Panel,Programs, Turn On or Off Windows features. There was 3.5.1, but part of it was shut off,so the little box didn't have a check in it. I opened it and turned on both parts and then there was a check in the 3.5.1 box. So I assume it is now running. It still doesn't show in the ADD or Remove list?

It will be in installed updates. If it`s not listed you may not have it installed.

Windows 7 comes with 3.5 pre-installed by default. It uses the exactly same runtime as 2.0 and 3.0 so it can run all those applications as well. 4.0 and 4.5 are optional and can be downloaded separately (4.5 can run 4.0 apps, so get it), and maybe some other program might need it.

The preinstalled frameworks aren't displayed in the uninstall list, this is normal, as they're part of the "Windows features" screen and can be removed from there.
By default, because of that, programs requesting 2.0, 3.0 or 3.5 .net frameworks can run normally on the default Win7 install.
