Playing video files from Portable HD on Laptop

This is a strange question im sure. Say you have all your movies loaded on a external harddrive. When you plug your harddrive into your laptop and play the movies from the harddrive on your laptop, does that essential write/imprint that movie code on to your computer, or is it still strictly on your HDD

It should remain on the external hard drive only, external hard drives and even flash drives are essentially just hard drives that you can actively plug into and unplug from your system. The only place you may see traces of these files after playing them are on the actual video players themselves, I know Realplayer and Windows media player both used to have a recently watched section on their user interface (dont know if they do any more), but even then it would only be the name of the file that was played.

no the files will not write to the laptop when you play them.
as mentioned above the only footprint it may leave are in the players history,
or recent places. in the favorites column on the left side of a window
