randomly cant type password in the windows log in on my gateway laptop

some one please help.. Im tired of this issue.
This started a few months back. When I go to the windows log in screen some times I cant type in my password. Its like the keyboard on the lap top doesn't work. Some times I can just click on switch user and the screen will go off for a second and pop back up then I can type the password. What would cause this? Is the a hardware issue or something in the start up?

    Welcome to the Seven Forums.

That sounds a bit weird or maybe I'm not understanding you.

You should have to select a user to get back to the screen where you enter the account's password.

If you have a USB flash drive that you can move your file off of - then scan the computer with WDO:
    What is Windows Defender Offline?

I have norton 360 installed and have ran several scans and have not found any thing with that. It almost seems like there is something in the start up like it puts up a fake login screen. then some times it acts like an issue with the keyboard its self. the mouse will work just keys dont work. I will down load and try the windows defender and see what that does.

WDO is a different type of scan. Things can hide from regular scanners, that is why most antivirus companies make offline scanners too. If you don't want to take the time to do that scan, then we can move on. The scan would probably just come up clean and then you would not be thrilled that you spent the time to do it. I just like to start from a known clean starting point.

Please tell me more about the events leading up to this frozen log on screen. Was the computer asleep or off?

When you restart the computer, do you see a screen where you can select between users before you get to the screen where you can type in your password?

Its weird because the only time I have an issue with the keys not working is on the log in screen. Like Im using the lap top to type this now. No issue. If I just close the lap top and don't shut it down it will give me the option for other user. If i shut it down I dont think it gives me the otehr user option. Both ways the key board gives me issues when trying to type in my password. Im hoping there isn't some kind of key logger or some virus like that on my lap top.

If you fear a key logger, then make a post in the System Security sub-forum and they can help you out.

You might also want to update your video drivers if needed. Video drivers handle things like sleep and hibernate.
