That is why we are checking if it will .you are not booting off the hard drive .
Can you give me the serial number of the laptop .
If you're on the laptop run one of these commands
Click on type in CMD inside Search programs and files inside the command prompt type one of the keys below
To get the serial number enter this command
To get the model number enter this commandCode:wmic bios get serialnumber
Code:wmic computersystem get oemstringarray
My laptop can't boot up because it can't detect the hard drive, I am on my sister's laptop, I don't really feel too comfortable posting my serial number on an open forum like this, is there any reason you need it? Sorry to be doubtful, I really do appreciate your help though! I don't really know how to hook up a hard drive to a DVD drive, I do have an external hard drive with one of those dock things. I can then connect the dock to a computer to access it, would that work also?
Reason for the serial to look up the service manual on how to remove the hard drive for you . It's cool if you don't want to no biggie .
Now the external device is the intel a SATA or an IDE port ? What model of the external device you have ?
Boot into BIOS setup using the key given on first boot screen to see if HD is detected. If so google the serial shown to find out the maker and run the HD Diagnostic extended CD scan. It will tell you for sure.
If you get to open the cover to see what manufacture of hard drive you have I could send you a hard drive diagnostic software . Take your time
As I just said above you can google the serial given for the HD in BIOS setup to determine its maker, then run the HD Diagnostic extended CD scan.
If there is no HD detected, then google the PC model to see how to remove and reinsert the HD to see if it can make better contact and become detected in BIOS. If not, replace it.
If your PC is under warranty, call Tech Support to have them supervise this so it will remain covered and they can directly process it for RMA.
If you're on the laptop with the hard drive issue . Open an elevated command prompt
Steps :
Click on the button
type CMD in the search box
right click on the CMD listed under Programs (1)
choose Run as administrator .
As shown below
NoteCommand Prompt opens to this path C:\Windows\System32>_
Type in the code below to get the serial of the hard drive
Code:wmic DISKDRIVE GET SerialNumber
