My Slideshow for Desktop and Backgrounds isn't working

All was fine until a few days ago. After cleaning off some malware that had latched on, I found myself with a black desktop screen. I've used a few methods recommended online, and now when I go to C:\Users\ES_Desperado\Pictures for example, I can see my pictures. However, when I go to Control Panel\Appearance and Personalization\Personalization\Desktop Background and navigate to the folder with my pictures, I find blank squares where my pictures should be. I select all of them, yet my computer refuses to display anything other than a solid-color background. Please help, I know this is not a serious issue, as people are dealing with bluescreens on here, but it is highly annoying and I wish to fix it.

What about doing a System Restore to before the malware infection?
