? back up to online storage whilst in sleep mode

    Hello
I have a large amount of files to back up to on-line storage. I want to do it during my service providers off peak period between 2 am and 8 am. If my computer is in sleep mode will it do the backup or do I need to change the power settings.
    Thanks for any help

Sleep Mode turns everything off but the memory, so it can't work. It's like Hibernation, but instead of saving your session to the Hibernation file, it saves it to memory and then your computer is completely turned off (except for the memory).

    Hello gerribol.

You will need to keep the system on in order to do the backup, however you can disconnect/turn off all external devices connected to your PC to save power.

Thank you for your helpful replies. In power options do i just select 'never' for when computer should go to sleep?

    Thanks

    Hi there
You can also save power by turning the monitor off / or allowing it to turn off automatically.
Where I am power is relatively cheap (unlimited Geothermal energy) so I tend to leave computers on 24 hours - but I always switch the monitors off. Once the applications are running you can turn the monitor off without interrupting the computer.

I'm actually not a huge fan of "Online storage" - since when you need it you might not have an operable computer to retrieve it with. For really critical stuff and system image backups I'd always keep these locally -- even "Off site" if necessary but always in an accessible location. I also am not convinced about the security of some of these online providers -- the servers are often situated in countries which pay very low wages (at least by standards most people on these forums are used to) so the possibility of data theft etc is quite large.

    Cheers
