Repair right-click context menu for New Folder

I am new to Windows 7 and somehow corrupted my right-click context menu. I lost the command for "New>Folder" altogether, used a registry key entry found online to get it back, but now when I click "New>Folder" I get a generic looking FILE icon. When I click Properties for this "folder" it is named "New Folder" but Type of file: shows File. Description is New Folder. I cannot place anything in this (because it's a file, not a folder.) This behavior occurs also when hitting the New Folder button in an explorer window. I have attached a screen shot (I think!) Hope someone can help.

Hello Peony, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You might see if downloading and merging the .reg file for the listed folder option in the tutorial below may help after a restart. It will restore the default associations for folders including the registry entries for new folder.
If that still doesn't help, the also use step 5 in the tutorial below to restore New Folder.
    Hope this helps, :)

    Hi pcPeony,

I am just curious to know what Registry entry you made. Can you please give me the reference? Just for my analysis and learning. :)

Shawn! You did it! Genius! If I could reach, I'd pat you on the back, but a giant "Atta Boy!" will have to do. Thank you SO much!

Hi Jumanji - I did exactly as Shawn directed and the first link took me to the folder for Folder Options registry keys and I downloaded and installed. This fixed my issue after weeks of agonizing!

I tried these fixes and it did not work for me. when I try to open the Registry Files, The files just open in the Notepad. It appears the registry file is not recognized. Any other options??

    Thank you

Hello Rob, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Your associations for .reg files have just been mistakenly set to open them with Notepad instead. To fix this, you would need to open Default Programs and set the reg file extension to have it's Current Default program set as Registry Editor (C:\Windows\regedit.exe). Afterwards, try merging the REG file again.

    Hope this helps, :)
