    Windows boots but no display

I recently built my son's new gaming rig for his birthday, with an Asus Maximus V Gene mobo and an HD 7870XT, and everything seemed to be working fine. Installed Windows 7 Pro, drivers, and Windows updates, rebooting periodically without any problems.

Upon giving him the new rig and setting it up, it now boots without showing the post or Windows screens. I can hear Windows starting, but there's no display. If I restart the PC several times I eventually get a display showing Windows starting up, but not the post screen, and can log into Windows normally. If I restart, however, it goes back to booting with no display until I restart several times again. I've tried updating the Catalyst drivers, uninstalling the Catalyst drivers, running Windows Startup Repair, and even using System Restore to go back to the initial Windows install with no updates. Nothing has helped. The monitor has a single DVI port, and is connected to the only DVI port on the GPU.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Have you checked the wiring for any loose connections or grounding issues. From your post, the problem appears to have happened after transporting the box which may have caused an issue with a connection.

I would start over and follow the same steps as for Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 but this time let Win7 provide its own drivers as it is meant to do since it's the first driver-complete OS.
