how to open com port 1 to 4 windows 7 starter

hi, how do I open com port 1 , its windows 7 starter which is different from windows 7, im trying to use a lead that plugs into my usb but it says "com port 1 does not exist" "interface not found" , i got it working before but cant remember how to do it, when opening device manager theres no options for com ports like on widows 7.

please help its driving me insane- as you may have guessed i'm not great with computers, many thanks

Its more likely that the computer has no COM ports thus you will need a USB to Serial adapter.

A com port is usually a serial port but can also be designated to a modem. Does your laptop have a serial port or a phone jack for a dial up modem? If it has neither that's why there are no com ports shown in device manager. What device is it you are connecting to your USB port. Also what is or where is the "com port 1 does not exist" "interface not found" message being displayed?
