Check disk failing, disk read errors, blue screen, computer going slow

As of late my PC has been going very slow, stuttering, freezing for a minute occasionally, and sometimes when I restart I get a disk read error that requires me to turn the PC off and on again. I ran check disk using command prompt, it got to 12% before it said it had found corrupt files, now it gets up to 37% verification before it finds corrupt files but cannot repair them.

I tried running system repair from the windows 7 disk, but it fails. I've used western digital to run tests on my hard drive, but there were no problems found.

dont know how to fix this now, i've been told its probably the hard drive failing but the scan says otherwise. I can really tell how it takes a lot longer to boot up, log in, even open internet browser takes a lot longer than before.

Are you running the Western Digital Data Lifeguard CD ISO (extract first) burned to CD using WIndows Image burner, then booted to run the Extended Scan? This should give you a definitive diagnosis of the HD, which appears from the Disk CHeck to be failing.

If the HD checks out I would do is try a perfect test Clean Reinstall to the same or another HD to know for sure.

The Western Digital website does not show any CD ISO for the diagnostics. WD Support / Downloads / SATA & SAS / WD RE2

The ISO download from digiex.net quoted by gregrocker above is dated 2008, whereas dlgdiag_5_20.zip is dated Dec 2012.

IMO, it is always better to run the latest version of the diagnostics from the official website.

You may create a DOS bootable pen drive with Rufus Rufus - Create bootable USB drives the easy way , extract the contents of the zip file into that pen drive, boot from the pen drive and run dlgdiag5.exe from the command prompt.

Also, you may consider backing up all important data before running the prolonged extended test.( If your disk is really going bad, it is better to backup first, before taxing the drive in anyway.)

It's the only bootable CD ISO I could find on the web since WD has removed them all for some reason. The WD Data Lifeguard bootable CD is the same program it's always been.

I had not heard that you can write the Windows version to USB flash stick. Have you tried this?

I booted up the pen drive with the dlgdiag on it, but it came up with a screen similar to cmd prompt where you have to input a command

what should I input there to run the tests?

also as soon as I restarted it, startup repair launched again. i feel like its about to die

before a last resort of getting a new hard drive, would it help if I completely reinstalled windows?

-Click Start, and then click My Computer.

-On the Tools menu, click Disconnect Network Drive.

-Select the network drives that you no longer need, and then click OK.

Stop Unwanted startup programs by following this

-Start > Run > write msconfig > Click on StartUp tab
-Deselect the programs you want to stop


-Click Start - Run, type in %temp% and then click OK.

Once that temp folder is open and you can view its contents, select and delete EVERYTHING that's inside it.

It's all junk and is a good place for "nasties" to hide.

If a few files resist being deleted, that's normal. Leave them alone and delete EVERYTHING else.

Repeat the steps with c:\windows\temp

After you're done with both temp folders, restart the computer.

Services.msc:

Click Start, type services.msc in the Search box. Press ENTER. Right click and stop each service which is not necessary for you.

Already told. Against the DOS boot prompt type dlgdiag5.exe and press enter. ( If you had correctly extracted the contents into the DOS bootable pen drive, you can see dlgdiag5.exe in the pen drive along with the DOS files. Check and make sure.)

Ok, so I put dlgdiag 520 on the pen drive, booted it, but got an error when I tried to run the tests. Instead I used dlgdiag504 and ran the tests, all passed and no errors with the ahrd drive.

You burned Western Digital Data Lifeguard CD ISO (extract first) to CD? Just checking.

If so you've now confirmed the HD via both methods which normally give a definitive diagnosis.

You can get a third bootable confirmation using Partition Wizard surface test . Install CrystalDiskInfo - Software to read the SMART data.

Perhaps the DL diagnostics repaired something so try Disk Check again from Win7 and Command Line on Win7 DVD or System Repair Disk .

In addition I'd run a few Startup Repairs to check the boot files and System from boot.

I sometimes cross-check these tests with Partition Wizard Partition surface test and Partition Wizard Check File System .

If these shed no light then I'd wipe the HD with Diskpart Clean All Command then run a full format as shown in Step 2 of SSD - HDD Optimize for Windows Reinstallation .

Prepare for now and then perform a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7
