    When you say "the basic reason I like it closed being to avoid eyestrain." do you mean if the laptop is open you can still see the screen lit up as normal?

    Yes but as the prime object is to avoid all unnecessary squinting, peering or straining on the eyes, why I've got a 24 inch screen combined with Firefox's useful zoom + and - options so why I keep the tiny laptop screen closed as much as possible. It's also pointless having two screens open anyway, so I see it all as having the best of both worlds with no bulky heavy console taking up extra space either....

    But you can turn the laptop screen off and keep the external monitor going. there is then no need to close the lid. Much better to leave it open as the heat will disperse much better with the lid open. There is much more surface area to disperse heat with the lid open>

    Morning Arcadian
    So perhaps just one more idea to make life a little easier. Instead of using the Magnifyer have you tried increasing the overall size of Type and icons. To try this;
    Right click on a blank space on your desktop. Click "Personalize" Then at bottom left of window that opens click Display. Of the three options if you are on Small click on Medium and click apply. See how that looks. If you are already on Medium try Larger 150% then Apply. See how that goes. You can access this via the Start button but sometimes, on some setups when you click "Larger" it makes the taskbar with the Start button disappear off the screen. Don't panic if this happens just right click in an open slace and you can then change back to Medium. Try it and let us know how you get on.

    Morning Mitchell65

    Thanks. Yes since I bought the new 24 inch screen I'd already sorted these options out on my old XP before it packed up and settled for 125% as any larger went off the screen as you said. Otherwise everything's working just fine this morning just a wire mesh cake tray to buy and perhaps a cooling pad as well....

    Really great to have found this forum as there's bound to be a few more things to grapple with I expect !

    Thanks again :)
