    Is it ok to only have 500MB of free space?


    As the name suggests I want to know if having 500MB of free space is ok.

    500 mb of free space is getting fairly low. Once you get down below about 10% of the total HDD size the computer can become very slow.

    It might be a good time to think about a new drive & definitely consider a SSD.

    No.

    Generally you should have at least 10% disk space free and you must be well below that. At 500MB free there are quite a number of normal Windows functions that are in danger of failing with unpredictable results.

    My Hard drive is only 20GB in size and I don't have much software installed

    Get a reasonably sized harddrive - e.g. 500GBs.

    I plan to get a 2TB portable hard drive so I can use my existing 500GB external hard drive in my laptop
