    Location of Icons

I make icons for Desktop files and place them in a folder in 'My Pictures' folder. When I reboot I lose the icons on my Desktop I make but not the icons I use from the Windows 7 folder of icons.
Is it possible to add my icons to the Windows 7 folder of icons? Then they would function like the Window 7 icons.

Or does anyone know how to make 'homemade' icons permanent?
    Thanks

there are a few ways to change the icons, Bongo a sevenforums member will be able to give you more help ,
some softwares allow you to change the icons by right clicking the exe and selecting properties, they usually have a change icon button in the properties page, then you navigate to the icon you want.

I have Icons in a folder in My Pictures and they stay after a reboot. If you want to change the Icon of a folder just RC and chose customize.

    Welcome to the Seven Forums

Are you moving the folders from the desktop and then putting them back at any time?

As Gary pointed out above you should just have to right click on the folder go to properties and then customize and choose change icon and navigate/browse to your icon folder choosing your icon and then OK and applying your way out they should stay.

As far as making a new .dll with your icons in it it can be done but it would make all the folders the same you would not be able to individualize each folder you would have to do it the way I explained it above to make individual folders.

Have a look at this post it is another alternative Permanent Custom Folder Icon?

I made a folder called Icons which I stashed on my data drive. I dump all of my custom desktop icons in that folder. Then you simply go to each desktop shortcut and set the path to that folder using the change icon command. It works perfectly. Nothing ever changes unless you do it. Ahh control, so rare.........

You need to make sure your icon folder is always available and is never moved and you shouldn't have any problems. I created a folder under my userid for that purpose.

Please show the procedure and path to 'stash' a folder in the
data drive. I assume it is a folder and does it have a label?

I fear I tend not to overthink things too much...I just take a shot....I created a new folder on my desktop, named it "Icons" and dropped it on the data drive Icon. After that I just moved all the icons I wanted to use to that "Icons" folder and then set the shortcut paths. Right click on your shortcut, click change icon, browse to the "Icons" folder in the data drive, click on the one you want, click OK, click apply and done. The path is set. I do tend to make most of my own icons. It's not that complicated or else I would not have been able to do it!! My computer skills are very average....

Is this the folder where the Windows 7 icons are stored? -- %SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll ? Can I store my homemade icons in that folder?
I would use the web file favicon but it only displays when it's saved to the desktop in the IE browser. Is there a way to do that with my default Firefox browser? The homemade icons standout [while they last] because they are more than simple clip art.
    Any suggestions will be appreciated
    thanks
