Well I found out the hard way. After uploading and one of the programs scanning the devices - the association has changed my .chk files - how do I get this back on my System.

I think it is in file associate I now have filescout.exe that is trying to open everything.

Last time I trust third party freeware stuff for a while
    uninstall filescout. Check associations afterwards

I am not too sure - I am thinking that it may have been some software that tags on with the file check ones that I have just installed. Slowly just uninstalling all segments of the computer.

I went into google - it was from one of the sites for FOUND.000 and .chk files - so beware people

I went into On Win 7 go to c:\\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\FileScout and there is the uninstaller

I now have to set assoc again - lesson learnt

filescout is uninstalled now? file associations are normal again?
Goto c:\\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\ and check the creation date of filescout. Then you know when you installed it. What creation date has it? (rightclick filescout folder->properties to see "creation date")

I am pretty sure that it was from either of the first two websites - I am doing some investigation. I have the date of the 19th June 2013. So it was recent. That is when I was looking for these utilities I will just stick to what is recommended on here.

Thank you for downloading CHK File Recovery - Tucows Downloads
UNDELETE Files - Active@ UNDELETE 8.6 Data Recovery Freeware Toolkit

I also tried these - I think that it also scanned - if I remember and I stopped it mid way

    Do this System Restore
and go back in date/time BEFORE installing filescout. File associations should be normal afterwards

I already uninstalled the program to remove the application.

I did not know about the issue regarding the System Restore. Will do that.

This what the file assoc looks like now - some look like they are alright - just non Windows extensions look affected.

I am glad that I picked it up. I only noticed it when I looked at opening a PDF and the Windows for looking for items - if it did not have an extension that was covered by windows - next to organise - it had a red power like button.

I am never doing anything like that again.

Can not mess around with some software.

I also was recommended Revo Uninstaller Pro to get the 'left over files' apparently.

    Thanks for saving me
