Can't get past "other user" on log-in page

I'm using Windows 7 on a Dell machine. When I installed 7 a few months back, I didn't set up a system password (I don't think) because I'm the only person on this machine and I didn't want to log-in each time when starting up. Normally when I start or restart the computer I go straight into Windows and into my account.

While playing chess today, my monitor froze. I turned off the monitor and restarted the machine and the monitor seemed fine during start-up. But then I got a system log-in screen and an option to log in as "other user" and that's the only log-in option was available. (I'm not sure why all of a sudden I have to log in.)

So when I hit "other user" and then try to log in with what I think is my username and a likely password, the system says no go.

Why am I getting to a log-in screen now all of a sudden? And how do I get in to the system if it's saying my username and password are wrong?

Update: OK, after restarting several times, all of a sudden I see the welcome screen and then my desktop -- I'm in like normal. But my desktop picture is now back to a default Windows one and the task bar, which used to be a dark blue, is now a light gray. My theme had gone to "basic." Any guesses as to what all happened to my system?

Hello Bilco, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Since you are now logged in, see if you may be able to do the tutorial to hopefully fix this "Other User" log on screen issue.
If not, then you might see if doing a system restore at boot using a restore point (if available) dated before this happened may help.

    Hope this helps, :)

Thanks, Shawn. I'll do a system restore to be safe.

Right click the Desktop and Personalize, choose any of the Aero themes and see if you can change it when it suddenly changed to "Basic". If you are unable to do so, then this is looking like a problem with the video adapter or its driver that has just crashed.
