Windows Explorer behaving very badly, becomes unusable until reboot

I have the strangest problem with Windows Explorer. It started months ago but was very intermittent. Now it happens after almost every few times I use it. When I start up, everything runs normally. Then it loses its drives and just displays libraries and favourites. Then it refuses to display any image thumbnails of JPGs etc. Finally it sort of gives up completely, when you click on a folder the green search bar starts to slowly come across and it often doesn't end up finding any files or it just seems to hang (though sometimes it finds them after quite a while).

I have tried disabling loads of startup programs and services, I have even turned off programs like avast, dropbox, livedrive but no difference. I used shellview.exe but that yielded no gains. Even running in safe mode it does the same thing.

    Has anyone got any ideas?

Hi sunnyjayjay and Welcome to Seven Forums.
The first thing in a case like this is to look for file corruption. If you have not done it already run chkdisk Run Check Disk from the Command Line to Find and Fix Errors You would run it on your C drive and you would need to reboot. If there are errors it will take some time. The next thing to do after Check disc has completed would be to run System File Checker.
Use the System File Checker tool (SFC.exe) to determine which file is causing the issue, and then replace the file.

To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Open an elevated command prompt. To do this, click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.
    2. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER: sfc /scannow
The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.

This make take some time, run this tool 3 times and see how things are. Report back with your results.

Thanks. I have now done both of these. Chkdsk finds no errors. I ran sfc /scannow three times and each time it reports "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations".

    Any further ideas?

This is a real problem. I am having to reboot every 30 mins or so to keep my machine usable. Any help would be very gratefully received.

Can you please upload the MSINFO32 file?

    1. Start> RUN> "MSINFO32" without the quotes then hit [Enter].
    2. In "MSINFO32" go to, File> Save> name it your user-name and upload.
    • Are experiencing this problem all around your system or is it completely unusable?
    • Did you try to scan for malware?

    Download | Process Explorer.

Immediately after a Cold Boot launch Process Explorer (if you have a short list,
click "Show Processes From All Users" the right most option in the top bar):

    • Arrange "Working Set" (by clicking on the top of that column) Take a screenshot.
    • Arrange "Private Bytes" (by clicking on the top of that column) Take a screenshot.
    • Arrange "CPU" (by clicking on the top of that column) Take a screenshot.

After 30 minutes (or the maximum amount the system hold its self together):

    • Arrange "Working Set" (by clicking on the top of that column) Take a screenshot.
    • Arrange "Private Bytes" (by clicking on the top of that column) Take a screenshot.
    • Arrange "CPU" (by clicking on the top of that column) Take a screenshot.

Upload the screenshots in a .zip file arranged in folders please.
