When you say freeze: [all freeze ups are not the same...]

1) Any error(s) or blue screen of death?

2) Does the mouse work at that point?

3) Does the capslock on the keyboard function?

4) How long did you let it stay frozen?

Good news is safe mode works, it's likely video card driver needs uninstalled, reinstalled. [or some other critical one like the motherboard chipset driver]

Thus the needs for your hardware specs.

Badly fragmented hard drive could freeze for a while loading programs.
SFC /scannow will check your vital Windows 7 install files, and disk checking is self explanatory. 8)
