    Can't create I.V. folder

Hi! I can't create a folder named "I.V.", because Windows erases it automatically....
I suppose the system does use this folder...I would like to know more about it.

    bye

Do not end a file or directory name with a space or a period. Although the underlying file system may support such names, the Windows shell and user interface does not. However, it is acceptable to specify a period as the first character of a name. For example, ".temp".
    source: MSDN

When I tested, W7 seemed to delete the entire folder. I had to refresh to see that the folder was there, just without the ending period.

Just tried to create the folder with the name I.V
If I enter dot after V it automatically removes it. As mentioned above by UsernameIssues, we cannot put special characters in folder names. Atleast not at the end.

I was able to create it. Tested it, I am able to create files and it is not getting deleted as well. Also, the screen shot I have attached is also named as I.V. jpg

What you were doing essentially is creating a folder with the "s" attribute, meaning it was treated as a Protected OS file
so windows hides it due to the fact that it is set to do so by default.

By unchecking that option your mysteriously disappearing folders will show-up :).

    Edited see below.

Before even considering adding this to my personal knowledge base, please educate me: How do you know the user was creating a folder with the system attribute? Or how is it possible in the first place to set the system attribute already when creating a folder with Explorer right click > New folder ? Are you absolutely sure that the OP would have seen the folder I.V., that it was present and existing if he/she had only enabled showing system protected files and folders?

Sorry but I must very strongly disagree. The real, correct answer was given to the OP in posts #2 and #3. I will not add this disinformation to my knowledge base.

After digging in Procmon I came to realize I spoke too soon, and I regret it .

What happens is that windows removes the illegal characters from the folders name but doesn't
delete the folder it just waits for the next refresh in-order to display it.
That is what lead me to believe that by unchecking the Hidden OS Files option (and refreshing
which lead to the above) the two are are related.
I should have looked in Procmon prior to posting....

    I am truly sorry.

Thanks Kari for making me look deeper!

That was not my meaning, YoYo.

My point is and was that Seven Forums is so big, a "market leader" you could say that we cannot afford spreading inaccurate information. We have to think not only the OP but also the future readers of this or any thread we participate. As the information you gave happened to be completely false, it needed to be corrected.

Please do not take this too personally, it was not my intention :), it's just who and what I am (see the title under my avatar and username!).

    You're right, I completely agree.
I will tread with caution in the future, I guess a lesson needed to be learned

I won't take it personally, just had to clear the air :)

Folders may have extensions. But even with an ordinary file, if there's nother after the last dot, there's no reason for the dot. So the system removes it. Otherwise the OS will get errors scanning past a dot looking for additional characters that aren't there in the name.

In some applications you have to end with a dot so that the file save dialog will not use a default extension. Go figure. :)
