I ran a clean boot to restore my HP laptop.

I hibernate it and then I turn it back on only to see a black screen.

It won't go any further than that. I end up having to hold on the power button to turn it off.

Why is this happening and how can I fix it?

If it means anything I have windows 8 (there forum wasn't helpful)
You might want to change your system Spec in you user profile to Windows 8.

Run Automatic Repair - Run in Windows 8.

It should automate System Restore. If not run it from the Repair Options list manually.

When you say you did a Clean Boot, exactly what did you do and what do you wish to accomplish. You should be able to disable all startups in Task Manager except your AV.
    The system restore didn't work.

I disabled something in startup using CCleaner that ruined the laptop's ability to go on the internet. And something was wrong with the volume shadow copy service so I couldn't restore

What about Automatic Repair? You were to run that first. If you ran it then run it again.

There is nothing in the Startup list that would result in a black screen unless you had very unusual graphics settings that were being controlled only by the display device's software which isn't needed by most users. At least in WIn7 everything can be disabled that's in the list, but you'd want to keep at least your AV for protection.

Since it's Win8 I would wait for help there. Here we would try System Restore from the disk System Recovery Options next to see if it can be made to complete. If not it may require rescuiing files to clean reinstall similar to the steps in Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Start.

    Uninstall classic shell
    turn hibernation off
    reboot
turn hibernation on (or leave it off if you don't need it)

I did an automatic repair twice and both times it said that it couldn't repair the PC. I even did another clean boot and I still have the problem.

I messed up something in the start up list that affected the internet not the display. I didn't know how to fix the next problem so then I did a clean reboot, after that I started having the hibernation problem.

I uninstalled Classic shell and now use something called "Windows 8 Start button"

I don't know if it means anything, but I've been hibernating via that.

I would ask at Windows 8 Forums since it may be a known issue with Classic Shell.

Otherwise disable Hibernation, then reboot and re-enable it to see if that resets it to work.

Check the logs for errors which might relate.
