Freshly used file, missing in action

I was using a file in OpenOffice Calc about an hour ago. (Many hours spent on it.)

I saved my work every 5 or 6 minutes. And now, I can't find it anywhere.

I got my PC from my Grandson. He broke it so it won't close all the way but it seems to work fine as long as I leave it on my desk. It was clean of files when I got it so it's easy to look everywhere. Not in the Recycle Bin. I have about 12 files in it and some are from 3 days ago so I know that I didn't empty it with the missing file in it.

How in the heck could it disappear? And is it lost forever?

    Thank you

    BB Kink

BB if you know the name of the file just type it in Start > search. It should pop up there.

    Hi BBKink, welcome to SF.

Have you tried to search the file via Start button. Click on start, in the search box type the name of the file (the name that you saved it with).

If you somehow made that file hidden. You can go to Control Panel==>Folder option==>View and select the option "show hidden files and folders". After selecting this option look for your file where you saved it. If your file is there you can change the attributes of the file by right clicking on it and go to properties, there you will find an option "hidden", uncheck that. Once all is done go back to Folder options and select "Don't show hidden files and folders".

    Keep us posted.

    Thanks for all the help.

I should have said that I had tried the "Start > search" method several times. I've done a manual search through the entire PC. (I opened every folder) There are very few files on it. Nothing.

I tried the "Show hidden files" but there was nothing.

Hmm try the Partition Wizard BB Best Free Partition Manager Freeware and free partition magic for Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Vista and Windows XP 32 bit & 64 bit. MiniTool Free Partition Manager Software Home Edition.

Open it up and then click on each partition to "Explore" it

NB These are just examples of the different partitions you can go to and you will find this tool really handy to keep.

    OpenOffice Options

Did you change the default save directory in "OpenOffice Calc"?

If not just open it again and try to save another file.
In the Save dialogue window, check what path is displayed.

Another option is to check the preferences in "OpenOffice Calc".
It should have an option to set the default save location.

Here is a screenshot from OpenOffice in Ubuntu 10.
Choose "Options" from the the "Tools" menu.

See if your file is saved in that location.
The location will be different (from the Ubuntu screenshot) on your Windows PC.
