How do I make programs not launch by default everytime I boot?
I don't want it to launch.
Click on Start
Type in msconfig and launch it. Then click the startup tab and remove the programs you don't want starting at boot up.
You only need your AV, any sync, gadgets or stickies you use to start with Windows. All others are freeloaders on your system resources which often spy on you.
To get the cleanest boot possible follow Step 3 in Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7.
Work through the other steps to go over your install and become more familar with Troubleshooting.
Not sure. There would be some variation on many of the steps.
Clean Boot would be done in the Task Manager, or using CCleaner, in Windows 8.
Someone who wants to check the rest of the steps in Windows 8 is welcome to do so and post amendments I'll gladly add to the tutorial. I don't use Windows 8.

Well he posted at SevenForums so he'll need to adapt them then.
What I would do is install CCleaner and on the Tools>Startup tab deselect all but your AV, any sync you use. If a listing is in question, google it to find out if its needed or ask back here. But nothing is needed except AV in almost all cases. The rest are freeloaders which likely spy on you.
If you try to access Startup via msconfig in Windows Ate it will refer you to the Task Manager which can do the same thing. The Services tab I believe will still be there, along with a tick box to Hide all MS Services. Then you can deselect everything except AV there, too.
Let us know how these work. They may have better help and tutorials for Windows 8 at www.Eightforums.com since we are kept so busy by Win7 here I hardly have time to install Win8 to try it and uninstall it again.
