User switching implications - programs still running?

If I'm logged in to my Win 7 account and have a program doing something (e.g. backing up files) and then my mum/mom switches user to her account, does my (backup) program stop running until the user is switched back? Is this the same for Windows XP?

Your programs continues to run even when others are logged in

You can watch them writing to the hard drive via Task Manager if you turn on the IO columns.

And Resource Manager will show network traffic for your backup program
(assuming it is backing up to an server on the internet).

Wowee! Thanks a lot. I didn't even realise that those columns could be adjusted!
