i dont want to get a water cooling because that would just be masking a problem if you get what i mean. if the cpu temp is at 70 will the heatsink be about the same? could i measure the temp of the heatsink to determin whether it was the cpu and or mother board that is causing the problems?

Yes but try to get the temp off the base plate and not the fins of the cooler but even they will be fairly close in temp I would suspect.

You can get one of those temp guns but really I would just use software. Also most fan controllers also have probes that you could stick right to the fins down low.

Have you looked around in the bios for a temp warning level and just set it higher?
