Control A searches and does not select all

Control A opens search box in top right, does not select all (or any) files in My Computer and Windows Explorer. Instead it searches. It does something (Puts a rectangle on all A s) to the view with multiple small rectangles. Therefore I am unable to select all files.

    I'll greatly appreciate advice.

Boot to Safe Mode and try it there. If it works then something is starting in a normal boot that is usurping that function, try this: How to perform a clean boot to troubleshoot a problem in Windows 8.1, Windows 8, Windows 7, or Windows Vista

Thank you for your reply. Control A and control Z using the left control, do not work. Both work using the right button. Is this 99% evidence that the left button is defective?
As you suggested using safemode does not enable the left control button. Also the on-screen keyboard board does work using both control buttons.

Does this mean you have the same problem in Safe Mode? If so, try a new keyboard or if this is a laptop, try an external USB keyboard. If that works then it's quite probable the keyboard is defective.
