If you suspect a bad .dll, I suggest you do a Repair Install
I was afraid it might come to this. I do have a "Reinstallation DVD Windows 7 HP 64-bit" from Dell furnished with the computer. There is no "Read Me" file on it. It says on the disk to "Use this DVD only to reinstall the operating system on a Dell PC". So I assume this disk has SP 1 on it. My Windows Update history shows SP 2 was installed the day I set the computer up. So therefore I would use step 7 on the tutorial. Could you please confirm this for me before I try something foolish. Of course before I start this procedure, I will back up all my data. Any other suggestions? I have reinstalled Windows before, but only on a totally lost system, not on a system that is not doing one task that I need it to repair.
    Thank you.

    MileAhead,
Should have mentioned this in the post: I have a laptop with Windows 7, but using the printer wirelessly and it prints jpegs from that computer. Maybe I should connect it up via USB and see what the results are.
Problem is solved. I did just this above, connected my laptop to the printer via USB and it printed just fine. So then I decided to put the desktop in wireless mode and it printer fine there also. This told me it was not a Windows problem, but the USB. The USB worked fine on the laptop, so I connected the USB to another port and that solved the problem. Sometimes the easiest solution is most often overlooked. Thanks for all of your help for this first timer. But that raises another question, why would the USB port work for one software program and not another? So with that question in mind, I decided to switch back to the original port and it works fine there now also. What is going on here? I have disconnected and reconnected that cable many times over this past week working this problem. Oh well, all is well now!! Any thoughts from any of you. By the way, the computer nor the printer was ever restarted this morning.
