    Unable to execute, error 5 access denied.


    Recently whenever I have attempted to install virtually any program, I've been constantly receiving this error message "unable to execute file in the temporary directory error 5 access is denied". From several google searches I have understood that the general cause of this error message is a lack of privileges regarding the temp folder. However this has not helped me since I have the permissions required so I cannot give myself them. I've found a few suggestions to use the "hidden" administrator account or make another administrator account and install via those, this does not work either. This has only begun happening recently and I would prefer to fix the issue instead of restoring/formatting.

    Hello,

    A System Restore is your best bet. Choose a restore point before the error message started.

    Having looked I don't actually have any restore points before when I first received the error unfortunately.

    Have you tried using internet options to delete all files except saved passwords?

    Might I also suggest ccleaner? See my tutorial here: CCleaner - Delete Junk Files

    That should fix the issue.

    Did you use the steps listed below?

    Navigate to %temp% or C:\Users\[Username]\AppData\Local and right click on the Temp folder and choose properties, then click the security tab and click advanced.

    On the permissions tab you should see the permissions that are there. There should be 3 which are:

    1. 'SYSTEM' with Full control which applies to 'This folder, subfolders and files'
    2. 'Administrators' with Full control which applies to 'This folder, subfolders and files'
    3. 'Your Username' with Full control which applies to 'This folder, subfolders and files'
    and all 3 should be inherited from the C:\Users\[Username]\ folder.

    If you don't have the 'Include inheritable permissions from this object's parent' option ticked, then tick it and click continue; if there are any problems, then remove the permissions that aren't inherited.
    Once you click 'Apply' and click 'OK' you should have the permissions to write to the directory and you won't get those error messages any more.

    Missing old restore points.

    Did you recently do a fresh install of Windows?

    Did you delete your old restore points?

    If you have not done either, you may be infected. This would account for system changes and missing files.

    I have followed the steps and unfortunately it hasn't resolved the issue, I'm running a virus scan at the moment whilst at uni so hopefully that will have some good news when I get back.

    Also I don't have any recollection of removing previous restore points however when I did format I didn't really use the pc too much during the summer though the lack of restore points does concern me somewhat.

    Just for good measures. It would be a sound choice to check for Virus and Malware before continuing to diagnose your issue.

    What do you use for Internet Security?

    After you have ran a virus scan and removed any threats it finds.

    Download Malwarebytes, and Junkware Removal Tool, run a scan and remove whatever is found, as well.

    Afterwards, let us know if there is any improvement.

    Ironically I can't install junkware removal tool because access is denied to temp folder. Running malwarebytes at the moment but I'll be away or a few days so I'll necro topic then.

    Hello Statxi,

    If you are unable to install JRT by selecting RUN, then select SAVE AS
    to the Desktop.

    Double-click to open the App. Press any key to start the scan.

    Be patient, takes about 10 minutes to complete.

    Review JRT Log to make sure everything has been deleted.

    Post the log if not sure.
