    windows 7 boot up failure

Hello all, my dell inspiron n5110 laptop downloaded windows updates recently and i closed the pc down properly but next day windows 7 home premium would not boot up, got to log in and blue welcome screen then frozen black screen. My norton symantec security 2010 software had just expired about a week and i removed hard drive which was working ok and copied files and folders to external hard drive using my brothers laptop and sata cables into usb2 port. Tried windows 7 re- installation cd which came with laptop for windows 7 home premium to repair but no good and this message was unable to fix problem.I tried safe mode but got no proper graphics just black screen with safe mode written in 4 corners.
Now after switching off my brothers packard bell for the night, the next day his laptop is now the same as my laptop and windows 7 will not boot either and black screen.
Is this a virus problem or corrupt files some where, i may have copied some files to his c:\drive but not sure, anyone got any clues on what is causing this problem, thanks
